Avesta Art Residency 2025

Verket announces the Avesta Art residency. The residency aims to strengthen the conditions for professional art life in Dalarna and to develop Avesta Art and Verket. It is open to trained, professional artists. The residency artist will receive exhibition space at Verket, directly following the residency period. The Avesta Art residency is carried out with support from Region Dalarna.

Residency period: May 26 – June 27, 2025.

Application open: February 14th - March 16th

Notification about the residency: will be given on March 21.

AVESTA ART RESIDENCE

The residency offers a professional artist a work opportunity in an inspiring industrial environment in the scenic southern Dalarna. Creative freedom is provided for the residency artist to explore and deepen their own artistic practice through engagement with the ironworks environment.  

The purpose of Avesta Art residence is to strengthen professional art scene in Dalarna and to enrich and develop a fruitful companionship with Avesta Art and Verket.

Workshop, studio facilities and accomodation

The residency includes accommodation with a self-catering kitchen, within walking distance from Verket.

A work space with a workshop near Verket is available to the residency artist during the day. It is equipped with machinery and graphic tools, large workspaces, and opportunities for collegial interaction.

Acknowledgements

Verket is an industrial heritage museum and a venue for art, culture, and gatherings in the former ironworks buildings by the Dalälven River in Avesta. Each year, the exhibition Avesta Art is held, where contemporary art interacts with the ironworks environment. Verket offers daily tours and hosts a large number of booked groups. It also features a creative workshop with art educational activities, a café, and a museum shop. Right next to Verket are the hiking trails Älvpromenaden and Bruksleden. In the surrounding area, there are culturally and historically significant sites, nature reserves, and the Färnebofjärden National Park.

Verket and Avesta Art are run by Avesta municipality, with support from Region Dalarna. Verket and Avesta Art is in a process of development and this extra support from Region Dalarna allows a mutually enrichening creative collaboration with art professionals.

Criteria

The residence is open for applications from professional artists who hold a degree in Fine Art or have a minimum of 4 years of well documented exhibition experience.

The applicant can be a resident of Sweden or abroad, but please note that travel costs are only covered for travels within Sweden.

Appointed Artist-in-Residence shall:

- shall during the residency work on new art projects and exhibit the works/work in allocated space in Verket.

-be covered by own insurance

- bring own specific artistic equipment and computer if needed

-shall document the work process during the stay and report after the exhibition period

-approves that Verket may publish its text and photo documentation of the work process and artwork on its social media and website.

APPLICATION

The application is open from February 14 until March 16. Send application by email to verket@avesta.se, In the subject line, indicate Application Avesta Art Residency. A confirmation of the application will be emailed on the next business day. Late applications will not be considered.

Applications must include:

- Updated CV.

- Letter of application wherein you describe what you would like to create during the residence, your artistical practice, and your interest in an artistic work/stay in Verket

Portfolio in PDF format with photographs of previous works. A link to a website or similar.

- Contacts for two references.

The selection committee is composed of Verket's staff, representing various professional categories (art, education, hospitality, communication). The selection committee's decision is final and cannot be appealed.

Avesta Art residence includes

Two weeks accomodation and workspace                                          

Honorarium: 35,000 SEK.

Meal: 200 SEK/day x 14 = 4,200 SEK.

Costs for material, up to 5.000SEK

Travel expenses (within Sweden only) 5.000SEK
