Olek strikes again

The crochet queen OLEK is back in Avesta! This time with a project right in the city center.

The project came about when the Polish world artist OLEK was invited to Avesta Art and built a team of immigrant women for the installation of her artwork in Verket, Avesta Municipality.

OLEK has made several installations in public spaces where she has crocheted buildings or statues around the world, often with the help of local women. However, this is the first time she has worked in public spaces in Sweden!

After a city walk in central Avesta, OLEK fell for the house, which is popularly known as “Gula Villan” (The Yellow Villa), and a collaboration is being initiated to give the building a new look. One idea is to bring art and Avesta Art into the public space and make visible a place and a building that belongs to Avesta’s history, a place that may have been forgotten and perhaps bring new life to this central oasis.

The project takes the form of a workshop and interactivity. OLEK takes the craft to a new level and lets us be part of the process. The team/working group consists of the women that OLEK previously worked with during her installation in Avesta Art. The team will also act as supervisors for those in the Avesta population and others who want to come and help, where the project becomes an integration project but where the roles are reversed. Here it is the newcomer who guides the project. “Gula villan” or “Little pink house” will be open to visitors and participants at given times. The project is expected to last from July 11 to about August 6.

The project is possible thanks to collaboration with: Avesta Municipality, Culture Avesta, Verket/Avesta Art, Sundh Fastigheter, Polish Institute, Midroc, Engstedts Rör, Best Western new star hotel, Avesta text and decor, RED HEART yarn, Technical service, Stoltz Minibus.
