Avesta Art 2025 24/5 - 14/9

The work in Avesta is the place where heavy industrial history and contemporary art fruitfully meet under the name Avesta Art in new exhibitions during the summer since 1995.

Avesta Art in 2025 places the unseen, hidden, dreamed, imagined or imagined before the eyes of the viewer. In the exhibition Of Things Unseen takes shape that which is invisible. Ghosts, essences and stories become images. Thoughts, feelings and philosophical or scientific abstractions take physical form. In sculptures, drawings, paintings, photos, films, textile works, filmed performances and several spatial installations, what you didn't know you saw, what you saw but didn't know existed, what you saw but no one else saw.

Eleven individual artists have been invited to participate in Of Things Unseen. Of them, two exhibit together and two form an artist duo. In the 24th edition of Avesta Art, they offer a comprehensive range of expressions.

Exhibiting artists: Carin Ellberg & Per Svensson, Johan Egerkrans, Jonas Liveröd, Kristoffer Zetterstrand, the artist duo LILITH, Maya Daniels, Margriet van Breevoort (NL), Sonja B Zornat and Yngvild Saeter (NO)

– In times of rapid change and unpredictability, classical myths or folktales can both create a kind of bridge to previous generations – and at the same time help to ask questions about direction and responsibility, says Charlotte Wells, operations manager, museum director and curator at the Verket. These are stories that have stood the test of time in human history. Who we have been, who are we? What do we think about yesterday's frameworks for life and descriptions of reality, are they still relevant? The future – does it look bright, if not how can we make it so?

– Realism and hope need to exist in the same breath. What is heavy needs to stand next to what is life-affirming. The artists' gaze and work contribute sincerely to that. This year's exhibition includes such diverse expressions as Yngvild Saeter's sculptures built from parts from motorcycles and Johan Egerkrans' illustrations of beings.

Horndal 4/10

VERKET I AVESTA PRESENTS UNIQUE CONCERT EVENING WITH HORNDAL, THE LEGENDS INTERMENT AND THE RESURRECTED SOCIETY GANG RAPE.

On Saturday, October 4, Verket invites you to a concert in the heart of the old ironworks in Avesta with the metal heroes Horndal – and no less than two bands in the heavier school. It will be an evening where the echoes of history and the raw power of music will make the old blast furnaces shake once again!

Horndal has made a name for itself with its heavy metal, deeply rooted in the fate of its hometown after the closure of the steel mill. With three critically acclaimed albums under its belt, where every note and every line of lyrics bears traces of the rise and fall of the industry, it's hard to imagine a more fitting venue for a gig than Verket – a place where history is still felt in the walls.

To make the evening even more special, Verket, in collaboration with ABF, has invited local death metal legends Interment, pioneers of Swedish death metal and part of the famous "Sunlight scene".

And as if that weren't enough: the evening in honor of the long-defunct cult band reunites Society Gang Rape, a name that is still whispered with reverence among the initiated. A band that left an impression but disappeared, and which is now – for the first time in ages – taking the stage again.

This is an evening that will never be repeated. A unique combination of contemporary and historical weight, gathered in an environment where steel once glowed and where music now takes over as the new fire.

Avesta Art artist in residence 2025

The work is pleased to present this year's Avesta Art artist in residence Amanda Karlsson. In her work, she explores the complexities of being human and how a fictional space can function as a stage for our need for intelligibility.

Justification:

Drawing on a childhood in the deep forests of Värmland surrounded by working-class and mythological storytelling, this year's artist-in-residence creates scenography for a fictional reality. In oil painting on flat, shaped wood, the images are transformed into three-dimensional sculptures where she offers us (new) stories and comprehensibility in a changing contemporary world.

We warmly welcome Amanda Karlsson to the Work for Avesta Art residency 2025!

Amanda Karlsson's sculptural paintings are both direct and general in their appeal, while at the same time there are layers of narrative and subtlety within them. Says Charlotte Wells, operations manager, museum director and curator at Verket.

The allure of getting very close but never being completely let into Amanda Karlsson's fictional world challenges the viewer's imagination and awakens their own associations, says Ann Björklund, museum educator.

During her stay, Amanda Karlsson will create a large-scale three-dimensional oil painting that will be exhibited during the Avesta Art season after the residency.

AVESTA ART RESIDENCE

The residency offers working artists a work stay in an inspiring mill environment in the scenic southern Dalarna. The artist in residence is given creative freedom to explore and deepen their own artistry in the encounter with the ironworks environment.

The purpose of Avesta Art residence is to strengthen professional art scene in Dalarna and to enrich and develop a fruitful companionship with Avesta Art and Verket.

Avesta Art residency is implemented with funds from the Dalarna Region.
