Joana Vasconcelos was born in 1971 in Paris, lives and works in Lisbon. She is educated at the Center of Art and Visual Communication in Lisbon 1989-96. She got her international breakthrough with the work The Bride which appeared at the Venice Biennale in 2005 and at the Venice Biennale in 2013, she represented Portugal. Vasconcelos uses various everyday objects and materials to produce its large-scale sculptures, such as kitchen utensils, plastic cutlery and textiles. In her artistic work, she often works with issues related to cultural stereotypes, norms and consumption units. Vasconcelos has carried out several large-scale installations, including a series of textile valkyrias as for example Valkyrie Rán at ARoS in Aarhus, Denmark (2016). 2018, the solo exhibition "I’m Your Mirror" was shown at the Guggenheim Museum in Bilbao, Spain and the exhibition is now shown at the Serralves Museum in Porto, Portugal.
